Bates: Purposeful Work

Bates’ Purposeful Work program helps students to not only uncover their strengths and passions, but to develop the technical skills to achieve their goals. Bates and Oxbow brought this program to life through a highly visual web experience built around storytelling.

Challenges

The first challenge we faced was the need to speak to a variety of audiences. We also needed to build flexability and scalability into the website. Many decisions had to be made between design and development iterations to ensure that updating and adding to the site would be easy for every new cohort.

Solutions

During the duration of the campaign, first time users were met with a gate that helped us identify users to customize copy, imagery, and user experience for each audience segment. We then could target ads based on this information.

Structuring the stories around a timeline for each student worked well for the UX becuase we could create linear content, all using replicable formats. We reinforced the timeline motif with a signifier dot that follows you up and down on a linear path as you scroll. We created a few different timeline event templates to house photos and videos, all built with flexibility in mind.
