Plymouth State University: Interactive Map

Students don’t just come to Plymouth State University for their unique curriculum model or vibrant social scene. PSU’s classic New England campus in the heart of the White Mountains gives it a truly unique sense of place.

Of course, a sense of place is hard to experience without being there.

PSU called on Oxbow to help bring their vibrant campus to life for prospective students in a way that stands out from the noise of tired look books and campus video tours.

Challenges

Our first major challenge was that we needed to show the surrounding area in addition to accurately representing the campus.  We wanted this all to appear in the initial desktop view. The mountains, unfortunatley, are a bit of a drive from the campus. Using satellite imagery would make it difficult to highlight some of the key perks of the university.

Another task we needed to tackle was how to intergrate the student culture into the experience. How could we make this more than just a map?

Solutions

We developed a 3D model of Plymouth’s campus. Using this as the backbone of the interface, prospects can explore the animated campus landscape and surrounding attractions. The use of a 3D model enabled us to bend the geography while also still being representative of the place. We also integrated 360-photography and real-time user-generated social content.
